Schalke midfielder Leon Goretzka is reportedly close to joining Bayern Munich.
- Goretzka has 12 months remaining on his current deal
- Arsenal were interested, but it seems Bayern are ahead of them
- Schalke do no want to sell Goretzka this summer
Goretzka was reportedly an Arsenal target as the player refused to sign a contract extension with Schalke.
A deal, in theory, looked straight forward until Bayern Munich got involved.
According to Sport Bild, Goretzka joining Bayern is a matter of when and not if.
Should he not join Bayern this summer, the midfielder could join them on a free next summer.
Schalke’s general manager Christian Heidel said earlier in the summer that Goretzka would not be leaving this summer despite his contract situation.
It seems Arsenal will have to look else where to strengthen their midfield.
Goretzka was one of Germany’s stand-out performers in their successful Confederations Cup campaign and would have been an excellent acquisition for Arsenal.
