In a turn of events no one was expecting, Arsenal managed to beat Bayern Munich on penalties, and much of the credit has to go Alex Iwobi.

Coming on at half time with Arsenal 1-0 down, the young Nigerian had a lot to do to help get the team back into the game. Most of the side looked lethargic and no one really created a chance since Mesut Özil threaded Alexandre Lacazette through in the first half.

Iwobi looked up for it though, showing some positive touches and link-up play, and winning a free-kick in a dangerous position. He has had a very positive pre-season so far, coming on to assist Lacazette in his first game, following that up with another strong performance starting against Western Sydney Wanderers.

But it looked like his third solid performance in seven days wasn’t going to lead to anything until the very end against Bayern. He had been pressing the defence almost on his own at times and this work-rate ended up paying off.

Iwobi won the ball in Arsenal’s half, breezed past his marker and played in Ramsey in a wide position. The Welshman clipped it back into the box and Iwobi, continuing his run, placed a header perfectly into the bottom corner to level it for the Gunners.

This was the last action of the match and sent the game to penalties. Iwobi managed to convert to help Arsenal to a 3-2 victory in the shootout. Much of the credit also has to go to Emi Martinez for his saves, but overall none of it would’ve been possible without Iwobi’s efforts in the first place.

Hopefully he can keep this good run going if he plays again against Chelsea or at the Emirates Cup next week. If he can it’ll put him in a great position to start the season.
