Arsenal fans will be thrilled to hear reports that Arsene Wenger is set to offer Rob Holding a new contract.

  • Holding huge for Arsenal during final stages of season
  • Wenger wants to tie centre-back down to new deal
  • Aims for 21-year-old to become one of Arsenal’s key men

Holding was sensational during the latter stages of Arsenal’s 2016/17 season, particularly in the Gunners’ 2-1 FA Cup final win against Chelsea.

Therefore, according to the Mirror, Wenger wants to tie him down to a new contract and aims to develop the youngster into one of Arsenal’s key players next season.

The 21-year-old only signed from Bolton for just over £2m last summer and although he was the Championship side’s player of the season, very few expected him to bed into the Premier League quite so seamlessly.

In fact, the England youth international was supposed to go out on loan in January, but Wenger held onto him knowing how useful he could be.

Holding only made nine league appearances last term. However, six of these were after Wenger switched up Arsenal’s formation from the classic 4-2-3-1 to 3-4-3. A formation which incorporated the centre-back perfectly.

With others now watching Holding’s progress, securing him to a new deal early is sensible.
