TV pundit Glenn Hoddle has said that Arsenal can challenge for the title if they change their attitude.

  • Hoddle believes it’s attitude and not new signings that will help them challenge for the title
  • He said Arsenal need to replicate the FA Cup performance against Chelsea

While there has been plenty of talk of who Arsenal need to sign to strengthen their squad this summer, Hoddle believes that Arsenal already have a good squad and just need the right attitude to challenge next season.

“For me it’s not about who they bring in, I think they’ve got a really good side,” he said.

“The change is an attitude change, they need to change their attitude.

“If they get close to playing how they did in the FA Cup final against Chelsea, they will be right up there again challenging.

“Every player was on it that day, on the ball and off the ball.

“That’s what Arsenal haven’t had. They’ve got good players, they’ve got very good players still there and if they keep this squad, they might add to it but personally I don’t think they have to add that much, it’s an attitude change.

“If they all play like they did there, for the manager that day, they were excellent against Chelsea.

“They caught Chelsea on the hop and Chelsea didn’t know what hit them for long periods of the game.”

The performances against Manchester City and Chelsea in the latter rounds of last season’s FA Cup certainly showed what this group of players is capable of when they’re focused.

That such performances are quite rare and not replicated often enough throughout the season is a common source of frustration for Arsenal fans.

As always, the answer lies somewhere in the middle.

There’s no question that Arsenal need to improve their squad this summer if they’re to have a better season next year.

At the same time, greater consistency on the pitch and more frequent showings like the ones against City and Chelsea would do them a lot of good.
