Arsene Wenger is reportedly keeping an eye on Manchester United centre backs Phil Jones and Chris Smalling, with the future of the pair unknown this summer.

  • Arsenal have had long-standing interest in the United duo
  • Jones and Smalling could be out of favour at Old Trafford next season

According to the Gambling Times, Wenger has asked to be kept up to date on the two English centre backs.

Jones and Smalling face uncertain futures at Old Trafford after the arrival of Swedish centre back Victor Lindelof from Benfica. He’s expected to form a partnership with Eric Bailly.

Arsenal have been linked with the two since before they joined United. Arsenal were believed to be one of the clubs in for Smalling when he had his breakthrough season with Fulham, while Blackburn’s asking price for Jones proved to be too high at the time.

Several years later, neither player has developed as well as expected. Their performances towards the end of last season did little to convince Jose Mourinho they could be relied upon, nor would they have excited Arsenal fans at all.
