Arsenal are in second place in the updated Ultimate League table, calculated from the various teams’ average position over the past 50 years.

Sky Sports published the list of clubs and it unsurprisingly highlights significant progress in England’s top flight over the past decade-and-a-half.

Premier League champions Chelsea are in sixth place with an average position of 10.86, having never really experienced much glory prior to Roman Abramovich’s takeover of the club in 2003.

Everton and Tottenham have progressed well in recent seasons, sitting in fifth and fourth respectively with 9.00 and 8.82 points.

In the top three, Manchester United’s average position of 5.08 sees them narrowly miss out on a top-two place in comparison to Arsenal’s 4.96.

They find themselves more than one whole position below current leaders Liverpool (3.44) in this alternative table.

Arsenal have been consistent in the top-four until this season but their league finishes over the last two decades has contributed to them coming second in the Ultimate League table.

They’ll be keen to rectify the problems that led to them finishing below the likes of Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool this season, however.

The Daily Star also published a top-20 list which features many clubs outside the top division –  Nottingham Forest (21.70) Ipswich (21.12) and Leeds (18.12) all make an appearance.
