Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has revealed the club hold all the cards with Alexis Sanchez this summer, saying the Gunners will make the decision on the star’s future at the Emirates Stadium.
“We have nobody at the end of their contract so that will be completely our decision. Therefore, I just believe that the club has of course got a big job to do in the summer because you want keep players like Alexis and all the speculations can happen,” said Wenger, as reported by FourFourTwo.
The Chilean international has impressed for Arsenal this season, scoring 24 goals and making 10 assists in 38 Premier League games, having created over 78 chances and making more than 100 successful dribbles. Sanchez, who has just 12 months left on his deal with the club, has hit a stumbling block with the Londoners over his future, stalling on contract talks.
The former Barcelona man has previously spoken out about his desire to challenge for the major trophies domestically and in Europe, and admitted frustration with how Arsenal’s season has ended – the Gunners finishing fifth and missing out on the Champions League. There’s a slim chance Saturday’s FA Cup final against Chelsea could be his last game for Arsenal.
It’s believed he is considering his future at the Emirates with Manchester City and Bayern Munich linked with his signature, which could result in Arsenal having to cash in this summer rather than risk losing him for free next season. But Arsenal clearly aren’t going to bow to such demands and will decide for the good of the club rather than the player.
