Ex-Arsenal player Marc Overmars is rumoured to be on a list of potential directors of football at Arsenal, but is he ready for the job if called?

In 2012 Overmars was given the role of director of football at Ajax in what was called a ‘velvet revolution’ by Johan Cryuff.

As a part of the team that consisted of legends such as Frank de Boer, Dennis Bergkamp, Wim Jonk and Edwin van der Sar, Ajax were expected to enter a new era in the club’s history.

The start was a hard one, and there were plenty of mistakes made by technical staff with decisions often being taken based on very little information.

During that period, there were more than a few bad deals with Ajax missing out on the likes of Virgil Van Dijk and bringing in players that weren’t of Ajax calibre, like Niki Zimling and Nemanja Gudelj.

Marc Overmars became known for his strict financial management, refusing to invest big amounts of money, saving the club a lot of pennies and helping them achieve financial stability.

These days, however, he’s more open to bringing in players and his decision making has significantly improved with new players purchased that already have interest from the biggest clubs in Europe.

Overmars’ first few years were not really that good but it wasn’t entirely by his own fault. He’s slowly, but steadily, beginning to grow into the position, making decent decisions and the right moves.

It’s not a question of if he has the ability to perform the role of a director of football, but it has to be noted that there is still much for him to learn in order to become a great director.

Arsenal could use a man with his reputation and with his history of playing for the club, but it just doesn’t seem to be the right time for Overmars to take a job at a much bigger club with much bigger expectations.

Not that Arsene Wenger would have him back, anyway. Wenger, as we know, doesn’t agree with the DoF role at all, despite seeming to be the ideal man to take up the position himself.
