Joel Campbell’s lack of minutes at club level in recent months has seen the 24-year-old forward drop down his national team rankings based on current form, according to Argentine newspaper La Nación.

Campbell, who has made only two Liga NOS starts for Sporting since the start of 2017, has struggled to perform consistently and it’s unsurprising that the option to buy in his contract will not be activated by the Portuguese side.

Despite a lack of consistency at club level, Campbell has been named as part of the 27-man squad for Costa Rica’s FIFA World Cup qualification fixtures against Panama and Trinidad and Tobago next month.

However, the winger faces an uncertain future at the Gunners with a year remaining on his existing deal at Arsenal. Given the unsuccessful nature of this most recent loan spell, it’s unlikely that he will feature in Arsene Wenger’s first-team plans for next season, especially given the level of attacking depth at the Frenchman’s disposal.

As a result, potential suitors have already emerged.

Celtic right-back Cristian Gamboa, who was part of Brendan Rodgers’ unbeaten winning campaign in Scotland, and Vancouver Whitecaps’ Kendall Waston, both overtook him to take 6th and 7th place respectively within the national side’s pecking order.
