Arsene Wenger has spoken about the shock the Arsenal players felt following their losses against Bayern Munich and Chelsea.

  • Wenger claims Arsenal players in shock after big defeats
  • Describes players’ attitude as ‘quite special’

The Arsenal players were criticised for looking as if they didn’t care during defeats to Bayern and Chelsea.

In the space of two weeks in February, the Gunners lost 3-1 against their London rivals after beating them emphatically earlier in season, and 5-1 away to the the Bundesliga giants.

Arsenal fans weren’t entirely surprised by the results but were more concerned with the manner in which the team lost. They looked as if they’d given up.

Wenger insists this couldn’t be further from the truth, describing his team’s attitude as ‘quite special’ and claiming that the reason they looked as if they didn’t give two hoots during certain matches was because they were in shock.

“The players who came on contributed more than in any other team,” the manager explained to Arsenal.com.

“It’s true that for a while, the first Bayern game and Chelsea game was a big knock. For a while we [were a] bit like a boxer who got put on the floor twice.

“We lost a little bit and people interpreted that as them not caring. No. Maybe it’s because they care very much that we were like that – shocked. We were shocked.”

It’s hard to believe that the players were so shocked that they continued to play as if they’d rather be anywhere else but that pitch for the next two months.

However, actions speak louder than words and with results looking up, hopefully Arsenal can finish the season on a – sort of – high.
