Arsene Wenger has once again had to respond to claims that there’s been a ‘powershift’ in north London.
- Spurs set to finish about Arsenal for first time since 1995
- People claim Spurs’ strength this season equates to ‘powershift’
- Wenger points out that 1 strong season doesn’t equate to 20 years of dominance
This ‘powershift’, in which Spurs are now seen as the dominant team in north London, has been spoken about for years. It’s like a yeti – pundits, fans and managers have talked about it but no one’s ever actually seen it.
Every year, Spurs are supposed to finish above Arsenal and every season they fail, whether that’s well in advance or at the final hurdle, like last year against Newcastle, St. Totteringham’s day comes around like clockwork.
While this season it’s inescapable that Mauricio Pochettino’s team will finish well above the Gunners, this doesn’t magically erase 20 years of Arsenal being dominant and therefore equate to a ‘powershift’.
“Let’s be honest,” Wenger said ahead of the North London Derby on Sunday.
“I answered the question of [power] shift for 18 years. Onw year is not the same weight as 20.”
As much as Spurs desperately want this ‘powershift’ to be a thing, it isn’t. And it won’t be until they manage to stay ahead of the Gunners for 20 more years.
