According to a recent report, Real Madrid are welcoming offers in the region of £50m for Karim Benzema this summer.

The 29-year-old striker has been a long-term target of Arsenal and this development will be of particular interest to them. If it’s true, of course.

Although his ability has not wavered, the regularity of his goal-scoring has decreased in the past two seasons.

67 goals and 30 assists (all comps) in the last three seasons is impressive for many top clubs, but Real Madrid are constantly on the lookout for perfection. Having a more youthful presence in attack would excite supporters and collectively bolster their options, especially given Benzema is at the stage of his career where he should be playing week-in, week-out at the highest level.

Stats crunch – Benzema compared to Morata & why he may be set to move

With 17 goals and a further seven assists in all competitions, Benzema hasn’t had an awful season but, ultimately, there is room for improvement in terms of goals scored.

Álvaro Morata has been heavily linked with a possible move away from the Bernabeú again, but his statistics in comparison are more impressive than the Frenchman’s.

With a better minutes-per-goal ratio in La Liga (88 to Benzema’s 183), it’s understandable that supporters might want to see opportunities spread out more evenly between their attack-minded options.

Gareth Bale has struggled for consistency due to a number of troublesome injuries this season and although Cristiano Ronaldo continues to pull his weight in terms of goal contribution, his performances are often underwhelming. As a result, others need to pitch in  and only the Portuguese international has more goals this season than Morata.

Benzema’s goalscoring form has reportedly worried coaching staff in Madrid and they’re prepared to listen to offers for the French forward this summer.

Chelsea’s Eden Hazard has been heavily linked as one of their main targets and it’s likely that Madrid will allow some players to depart, freeing up further transfer funds if needed.
