Once Arsenal appoint a director of football, they’re hoping that they will put a stop to players entering the final year of their contract and therefore prevent future uncertainty over stars leaving.

With Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez, as well as Jack Wilshere, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Kieran Gibbs and Aaron Ramsey all entering into the final year of their contracts this summer, the Arsenal squad could look very different next year.

Ozil and Alexis’ futures have become one of the most talked about topics surrounding the club this season. Although, I guess that distracts everyone from the terrible form the Gunners have been in, so swings and roundabouts.

It’s hard for fans to rally around a team who might not even be there in a couple of months and must be even harder for the players who, for all they know, could be saying goodbye to their teammates very soon.

It also leaves Arsenal weak in negotiations. They either sell for however much is being offered or allow top stars to leave for free next season. Just like Robin van Persie in 2012. When Manchester United offered a reported £22.5m for an ageing injury-prone player entering into the final year of his contract, Arsenal had no choice but to accept.

According to Sportsmail, this will be a thing of the past once Arsenal’s new director of football comes in. They’re to ensure that players are tied down to new deals as soon as possible and help negotiations in other transfer deals. This will allow Arsene Wenger to concentrate on actually managing the existing football team and, I imagine, relieve quite a bit of stress.

While the Gunners have started their search for their first director of football ever, it’s unclear whether they’ll have one in time for next season.
