Paul Merson believes that Arsène Wenger will sign a contract extension once the current season is finished.

Out of contract in June, the Frenchman has yet to sign an extension and speculation about his future continues to dominate Arsenal-centred news.

A disappointing 3-0 away defeat by Crystal Palace on Monday has added more fuel to the fire regarding Wenger’s long-term future, with pressure seemingly at an all-time on Wenger and his next career decision.

When asked about the game Merson said, “It was terrible, terrible. It was shocking. The pressure’s on now.

Despite those words though, the 49-year-old TV pundit reaffirmed his belief that Wenger will remain at the helm beyond the current campaign. He was asked by Sky Sports host Max Rushden when a formal announcement will be made, in that case.

As quoted by the Express he said, “At the end of the season, when all the fans have gone home. It’s as simple as that.

The way Merson often speaks so matter-of-factly, you’d assume he has some insider information – given his 15-year spell at the club.

Given the level of frustrating inconsistency in recent seasons, it’d be a surprise that Wenger would be let go unless the club had already developed a long-term plan without him in charge.

As a result, Merson is probably right. Even if supporters are desperate for wholesale changes, starting from the top.
