Naming a squad three months before a tournament is a very unusual step taken by the England manager.

But he has clearly made his mind up and there were no real surprises as his selection has been quite consistent in recent times.

Here are the 23 players selected.

There are four Arsenal Ladies who will be involved next summer, provided that they don’t get a long-term injury in the next three months of course.

Goalkeepers: Karen Bardsley (Manchester City), Siobhan Chamberlain (Liverpool), Carly Telford (Notts County).

Defenders: Laura Bassett (Notts County), Lucy Bronze (Manchester City), Alex Greenwood (Liverpool), Steph Houghton (Manchester City), Jo Potter (Notts County), Alex Scott (Arsenal), Demi Stokes (Manchester City), Casey Stoney (Liverpool).

Midfielders: Millie Bright (Chelsea), Isobel Christiansen (Manchester City), Jade Moore (Notts County), Jordan Nobbs (Arsenal), Jill Scott (Manchester City), Fara Williams (Arsenal).

Forwards: Karen Carney (Chelsea), Toni Duggan (Manchester City), Fran Kirby (Chelsea), Nikita Parris (Manchester City), Jodie Taylor (Arsenal), Ellen White (Birmingham City).

Position by position analysis

Goalkeepers

No surprise here. Bardsley still the number one despite regular blunders in competition and final tournaments. Chamberlain is her very apt deputy. Telford over Earps is the only debatable selection.

Defenders

The only surprise is Stoney over Flaherty really.

Rafferty does not make the cut as the two left-backs selected are Stokes and Greenwood. Potter is selected as a defender while being a midfielder, but she has been used in the back three regularly.

Midfielders

Bright in as a defensive midfielder. For some reason England never select many midfielders despite playing 3-5-2 in recent games with the odd back four. Selection has been very stable in that area of the pitch.

Forwards

Duggan is in as well as Ellen White. Daly did not make it which is a surprise as she was involved in all other squads recently.

Obviously she was there as a forward before being moved back to defence to act as a wing back, mirroring what happened at youth level. It’s disappointing for her to be cut.

Kirby makes it despite being injury prone and not playing many games since the 2015 World Cup. But she is clearly different from the other forwards as, alongside Carney, she is the only real creative forward.

Mark Sampson has also announced his squad for the two upcoming friendlies against Italy and Austria.

The Lionesses will face Italy at Port Vale’s Vale Park on Friday 7 April (7.45pm KO) and Austria at MK Dons’ Stadium MK on Monday 10 April (7.45pm KO).
