‘I want to score more’ says Giroud

Olivier Giroud recently became France’s 10th highest goalscorer but the striker insists he doesn’t plan on stopping there.

  • Giroud’s scored 23 goals for France in 60 appearances
  • The striker made his debut on 11 November 2011 at 25
  • Oli wants to replicate Jean-Pierre Papin’s success

Olivier Giroud has replaced Real Madrid’s Karim Benzema in France’s starting lineup, scoring 23 goals in 60 appearances compared to his compatriot’s 27 in 78.

And while Benzema was initially dropped due to controversy surrounding his involvement in a blackmail scandal, Oli’s definitely stepped up and has been more than able to fill his shoes.

After becoming France’s 10th top goalscorer thanks to his brace against Luxembourg, Oli claims he’s not done and wants to reach for Jean-Pierre Papin’s record.

“It’s always nice to be the 10th player in France’s history to score [that many goals],” the striker told Arsenal Player.

“I’ve scored 23 goals but I want to score more for my national team. I don’t want to stop there. It’s obviously a great feeling and hopefully some more will come.

“My target is to reach Jean-Pierre Papin. It will be an amazing achievement for me so that’s why I don’t want to stop. He scored very nice goals and was one of my favourite strikers when I was young. At the end of my career, if I can say that I scored as many goals as him, I will be very proud.”

Jean-Pierre Papin scored 30 goals in 54 caps for France during his nine-year international career so Oli is just seven goals away at the age of 30.

You never know, if he performs well in the 2018 World Cup in Russia, he could do it.
