German legend, Lothar Matthaus, reckons that Alexis Sanchez would be a good signing for Bayern Munich.

Speaking with AZ [via Four Four Two], the former defender claims that Alexis would make a brilliant replacement for Douglas Costa, who has been hinting at leaving recently, or could slot in well with Bayern’s existing attacking stars.

“Sanchez is a great player, he would be a good signing for Bayern,” Matthaus said.

“His biggest pro is that he can play in a central role up front and on the wings.

“He would not only be an alternative to Franck Ribery and Arjen Robben, but could also replace Robert Lewandowski as Bayern’s number nine whenever he is unavailable.

“Costa is no longer the player he was when he just started at Bayern.

“Plus I do not like it that he has been hinting at a transfer in a number of interviews. That is not good for him, nor for Bayern.

“I think the club would not stop him from leaving if they bring in another attacker.”

Alexis’ current Arsenal deal runs out at the end of next season with several clubs, including Chelsea and Manchester City, linked. However, Arsene Wenger insists that he would rather hold onto the Chilean during his final year and allow him to leave for free next summer than sell him to a Premier League club now.

Alexis is said to be worth £50m, so allowing him to leave for free next year is a huge statement, but selling one of our best players to a direct rivals and therefore weakening us while strengthening them would be unforgivable.

Contract negotiations are set to restart in the summer.
