Paul Scholes has become an unlikely backer of Arsene Wenger, with the former Manchester United man saying that the boss has ‘earned the right to do what he wants’.

  • Scholes believes Wenger’s decision should be respected
  • Says Arsenal manager will be disappointed with form
  • Appreciates there is pressure on Arsene Wenger

With most pundits in the media advising that Wenger should step down, and voices within the fanbase growing louder with the same call, Scholes’ comments stand out.

It also seems that he, unlike many others in the punditry business, has some sort of grasp on just what has been happening at Arsenal over the past 12 years – a period of time when they missed out on players like Xabi Alonoso for the sake of £3m.

“He’s earned the right to do what he wants to do,” said Scholes.

“Obviously he’s under a lot of pressure because of the way they have performed, especially in the last few weeks. It’s not been good enough for that football club.

“I’m sure as a manager he will be disappointed and he will know the standards haven’t been good enough.

“Whether he wants to stay or wants to go you have to respect his decision. He’s been great for Arsenal over the last 12 years. It’s up to him.”
