On 27 March 1982, Terry Neill’s Arsenal won 4-3 against Aston Villa at Highbury.
It was the second of just two wins from 11 games between February and April and Arsenal eventually finished fifth in the League Division One table, with Liverpool winning the title, Ipswich Town coming second, Manchester United in third and Spurs in fourth.
Villa finished down in 11th.
During the win against Villa, the Gunners’ Raphael Meade, Graham Rix (2) and Alan Sunderland all found the net, while Gary Shaw, Pat Heard and Tony Morley scored at the other end.
Villa’s Terence Bullivant made his final appearance before moving to Charlton Athletic.
Elsewhere Spurs knocked Arsenal out of the FA Cup and went on to win it; they were thrown out of the FA Cup by Liverpool and lost on away goals to Winterslag in the UEFA Cup. So, not a fantastic season.
Terry Neill was sacked the following year, despite signing a new, improved three-year contract at the beginning of the season.
