Thierry Henry doesn’t think he’s right to replace Arsene Wenger at Arsenal. Not yet, at least.

  • Record goalscorer Henry one of many named as possible Arsene Wenger successor
  • Henry has little coaching experience and still ‘learning his craft’
  • Arsenal are still the club of Henry’s heart

Thierry Henry’s name has been mentioned more than once as a replacement for Arsene Wenger, despite having little top-level coaching experience.

Arsenal’s all-time leading goalscorer was offered the chance of coaching at the club he calls ‘the club of his heart’ but he wouldn’t give up his Sky Sports punditry role. So now he’s assistant coach with the Belgium squad.

“I am not saying that, in one or two years, I will be the manager,” Henry told Canal +.

“That does not come from me, there are things that need to be respected.

“When I say that I want to manager there, it is the club of my heart, but that does not mean that I have the right to, that I should.

“I have an enormous amount of respect for the manager and what he has done. You cannot stop people from talking, but I am with the Belgian national team and am in the process of preparing myself.

“Am I ready or not? That, we do not know, we won’t know. That aside, I need to learn my craft.”

No matter what your feelings about Arsene Wenger, it is quite disrespectful to suggest he could be replaced by someone with zero experience of managing a club. Sure, Henry is a footballing legend, especially at Arsenal, but that guarantees you nothing when it comes to the world of management.

Also, as you can see from his comments, Henry doesn’t seem to really knows what he wants. ‘Coaching is not my aim’ does not really sound like the words of a man who would be prepared to sacrifice his life to be a success as a manager, does it?
