Henry explains his famous Liverpool celebration

Henry 'sniffed out' Gerrard's mistake

Thierry Henry has explained his famous celebration when he scored against Liverpool in 2006.

During the match at Highbury, which Arsenal won 2-1, Henry jumped on a pass from Steven Gerrard intended for goalkeeper at the time, Pepe Reina. The forward had already scored early in the first half but slotted the ball calmly into the net, sending the home crowd mad, and followed the goal up with a rather odd celebration, in which he ran around sniffing his fingers.

According to Henry, this was because he ‘sniffed out’ Gerrard’s mistake and the gesture dated back to two years early at the Euros when France played England and won 2-1.

“We had an understanding with Stevie G,” the pundit told Sky Sports.

“He gave me a symbol at Euro 2004.

“I smelt it, that’s what I say and I smelt it again!

“I got lucky on the day!”
