Joel Campbell doesn’t know why he hasn’t seen much action during his loan with Sporting this season, saying he has given his best.

The Costa Rican striker has scored just three goals and created only four assists in 15 Liga Nos games so far this season. Recently, he fell out with the management after throwing a strop when he wasn’t allowed to take a penalty that was subsequently missed. He was dropped for the next game.

Speaking while on national duty, Campbell also revealed that Sporting have no option to buy at the end of his loan (not that they would exercise it) and that he will return to Arsenal in the summer.

“In football everything can change,” Campbell said when asked why he wasn’t seeing much gametime in Portugal this season. “I have given the best of me. I have played and I have not played, but that is football and I wait when I return to play again.

“There is no purchase option. I have to fulfil my loan at Sporting and then return to Arsenal.”
