On this day in 2011, Arsenal beat Barcelona 2-1 in the Champions League.

In stark contrast to Arsenal’s 5-1 loss away to Bayern Munich on Wednesday night, back in 2011, the Gunners managed to beat the La Liga giants at the Emirates.

Arsenal had made it through to the knockout stages, as usual, and of course drew Barcelona. Not many of us had high hopes, which made the win all the sweeter and the result is firmly cemented in most Gooners’ hearts.

When Barca went ahead in the 26th minute, we were sure we were in for a thumping. However, when Robin van Persie equalised in the 73rd, the crowd were behind the team, willing them on to get a winner. The atmosphere was electric.

It came in the 83rd minute through none other than Andrey Arshavin. A typical Arsenal break and beautiful finish saw the Russian put Arsenal 2-1 ahead. The roof came off.

Although Barca managed to beat us 3-1 during the second leg, thanks to some dodgy refereeing decisions, I’ll always remember the night we beat Barcelona and the Emirates bounced like it never had before or has since.
