Arsene Wenger has admitted his side got a bit lucky against Swansea and bemoaned how a positive afternoon almost turned into a nightmare.

With Arsenal two-nil up and cruising, a mistake from Granit Xhaka gifted Swansea possession. From that point Sigurdsson still had a lot to do but we know he has that sort of shot in his locker and nobody was surprised to see him find the corner with the ball.

Arsenal managed to get their two-goal lead restored only to switch off again as they tend to do, and with the scores delicately poised at 3-2, Jon Moss’s insane decision to send off Xhaka for what has never been more than a yellow card offence, Wenger’s nightmare almost came true.

“Well I got a bit full of the emotions because we were 2-0 up and then suddenly 2-1, after 3-1 up suddenly 3-2 and down to 10 men so what looked like a very promising afternoon could become a nightmare,” Wenger said after the game.

“In the end I felt our solidarity, our spirit got us through and over the line but it was much harder in the end than it could have been.

“I was [shifting uncomfortably in my seat] because they had some headers flying from the right to the left, they won some headers and we’re a bit lucky.”

And his initial thoughts on the red card? “In front of me it looked harsh but the referee made a decision and we have to get on with it.”

Harsh is an understatement when you consider Xhaka will now get a three match ban.

That’s the same as you get when you break a player’s leg.
