The Sun are reporting that Arsenal did indeed try to sign Antoine Griezmann but the Frenchman said no in order to remain in Spain where he is happy.

Griezmann allegedly told Arsene Wenger during the Euros that he did not want to uproot his family who are settled in Spain. An Arsenal ‘source’ added, “Arsene and Griezmann held talks during the Euros about his situation.

“The player told him outright that he was happy in Spain, and his family were enjoying life there.

“There is still interest. Why wouldn’t there be in one of the best players in the world? But nothing will happen this summer at least.”

Griezmann’s new contract with Atletico Madrid has a release clause said to be £85.5m and it’s hard to see Wenger going for him at that price next summer.

But, of course, there’s no guarantee that Wenger will even be the manager next season with his own contract expiring at the end of the season.

Most likely he will be, however, as we all know he has no desire to go anywhere, but much will depend on how this season goes.
