Barcelona defender, Jeremy Mathieu, has been the latest star to be linked with a move to north London. However, it appears that ship has already sailed considering he’s reportedly injured.

The Frenchman apparently tore his femoral bicep in his right leg during Barcelona’s 2-0 win over Sevilla in the Supercopa and will be out for around three weeks.

Although we didn’t hold out much hope for this transfer, considering we’ve been linked heavily with a move for Valencia’s Shkodran Mustafi, the fact that Mathieu is now out until after the transfer window shuts definitely puts the final nail in that coffin.

The Supercopa win was pretty costly for the Catalans. Not only they lose Mathieu but Andrés Iniesta also hurt his knee.

Other than Mustafi, the links between us and defenders are few and far between. Does this mean we’re only signing one defender this window? If we sign anyone, I don’t see us signing more than one. Obviously more would be nice and Wenger could surprise us but we have to remember that Gabriel, Mertesacker and Kos are all going to be back at some point. They are still at the club!
