According to reports, Arsene Wenger was first choice for the England job but he snubbed it in favour of staying at Arsenal.
Sam Allardyce is set to be named as the new England managed after Roy Hodgson bailed following the Three Lions’ embarrassing Euros. However, the Telegraph claims that the Sunderland boss is actually the FA’s second choice behind our very own Arsene Wenger.
Apparently, they approached the boss but, as he’s always said, he wants to honour the remaining year of his contract with Arsenal.
Can you imagine if he’d said yes? I certainly can’t. Although I’m sure the FA were interested in bringing Wenger on board, I never had any doubt that he would stay at Arsenal. No matter how coy he’s been over his future, he’s never even hinted that he would do anything other than honour his contract until 2017.
After that? Who knows. There’s always been a strong feeling that when he does walk away from managing Arsenal, he’ll move onto the board and I still reckon that will happen. Just not yet.
