The Italian media are reporting that Roma are moving closer to securing the signature of Thomas Vermaelen.

A while ago, rumours began to circulate that the centre-back was soon to be looking for a new club after the Barcelona manager, Luis Enrique, decided he wants to offload him and Roma are apparently interested.

Roma have been after Real Madrid’s Nacho but, according to reports coming out of Italy, the La Liga club are unwilling to sell. Therefore, Roma have had to return their attention back to Tommy V.

Since leaving Arsenal, the Belgium international hasn’t had the best luck. As soon as he signed for Barca, he got injured and only appeared once during the entire season. The season after, he only featured 10 times in La Liga. Therefore, moving on would probably be the best move for him. He’s only 30, which, as a defender, probably gives him a couple of decent contracts before retirements…maybe just one. If he’s going to revive his career, the time is now.
