Arsenal have allegedly tabled a £20m for Mamadou Sakho according to what appeared to be a report from the Sun.

Delivering only a tweet, the paper everyone loves to hate, especially on Merseyside, seemed to say;

On closer inspection, the account tweeting and causing the rumour to spread, is not even connected with the Sun.

Arsenal, as you know, are in the market for a centre back and have been recently quoted a price not far off this for Valencia’s Shkodran Mustafi.

It seems like this rumour might have all stemmed from the fact that the media think that Jurgen Klopp and the defender have had a falling out after the 26-year-old was sent home from their pre-season tour after being late three times (sounds just like the type of player Wenger would love). Although it has started with an uncredited account, the narrative in play at the minute means that it is ripe for spreading and that’s just what it seems to be doing.

Speaking about the incident, Klopp said, “We have some rules and we have to respect them,” said Klopp.

“After eight days, when we come back, we can talk. But it’s not that serious. We had no argument. You cannot argue when only one person is speaking.”

Costing Liverpool £18m in 2013, he has managed just 55 Premier League appearances for the club. He is under contract until 2020 and I would be very surprised indeed to see him rock up at Arsenal.

Or to even learn Arsenal are thinking of bidding for him.

How long do you think it will be until it’s actually on the real Sun’s page?

Whatever happens, it will be interesting to watch this rumour grow and mature. It’s not often we catch one right at the start of its lifespan. This must be what it’s like to be David Attenborough.
