Joel Campbell played 67 minutes as Costa Rica opened their Copa America campaign with a scoreless draw against Paraguay.
The tone of the game was set early on, with Costa Rica’s Yeltsin Tejeda booked within 20 seconds of kick-off for a foul on Celso Ortiz. It took just 13 minutes for the next card to come out, this time for Paraguay’s Jorge Benitez.
Ronald Matarrita was lucky not to be shown a red in the second half for his foul on Derlis Gonazlez and by the 77th minute the teams were so wound up they nearly came to blows after a poor foul on Dario Lezcano by Costa Rica’s Kendall Waston.
Waston was sent off in the final minute of injury time for a challenge from behind on Nelson Valdez and will now miss Costa Rica’s next game against the US.
Colombia top the group after their 2-0 win over hosts USA.
