Arsenal only have to look in the direction of a player and his leg will fall off (watch out, Jamie!) and it seems that this is exactly what has happened within hours of being linked with a £19.2m move for Atletico Madrid’s Yannick Carrasco.

The Belgian international, who came to the attention of football fans the world over when he smooched with his girlfriend after scoring against Real Madrid in this year’s Champions League final, has picked up a ‘contracted calf’ during training with the national team ahead of the Euros.

Sent for an MRI on Saturday, it’s not yet clear if his competition is in doubt but if it is, he won’t be alone as Thomas Vermaelen has also picked up another problem with Marc Wilmots saying he is ‘unavailable’.

What this means is that Belgium are likely to go into the Euros using a centre-back pairing of Tottenham’s Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderwireld. “Now, to recreate the axis of Tottenham,” Wilmots added, “is clearly the best solution, at least while Vermaelen is unavailable.”

And here ended Belgium’s Euro 2016 dreams.

[Carassco scored four and assisted one in 29 La Liga games last season. He is under contract until 2020 with a market value of £15m which increase due to the length of his Atletico contract. He moved to Spain just last summer costing £12.94m from Monaco.]
