Arsene Wenger took a moment following Arsenal’s win over Aston Villa to thank Mikel Arteta and Tomas Rosicky.

Both midfielders are leaving this summer and although Tomas wasn’t fit enough to play, Arteta featured and scored what will be his final goal as a Gunner.

“We lose Rosicky and Arteta – two exceptional players and influences in the dressing room,” Wenger said post-match.

“I want to thank them.”

Mikel, in particular, was emotional as the final whistle went. It’s unclear whether the Spaniard will be taking up a new role on or off the pitch next season but what does seem certain was that he will be leaving Arsenal. With the likes of Pep Guardiola wanting him to coach at Manchester City next season, you wouldn’t bet against it.

It’s sad to see both players go. Tomas has spent 10 years in north London, while Mikel came to Arsenal from Everton, taking a wage cut, when we needed him. He was our knight in shining armour and although, like Rosicky, he had injury issues, he was always a calming influence. He’ll be missed.
