Arsenal boss Arsène Wenger has rubbished reports that he is going to be offered a new contract at the club.
Closing in on 20 years in north London, the Frenchman’s current contract at the club expires in just over a year and the Times have claimed a new deal is about to be put on the table.
That deal would be a two-year extension, taking Wenger’s Arsenal reign into his 70th year and until the end of the 2018/19 campaign.
Those rumours have been thrown out by the manager on Friday morning.
“That’s completely wrong, you can treat that as an invention,” Wenger said. “It’s absolutely false.
“I would ask the press to check before giving out this information. You can check with the club or with me and we will tell you it’s false.”
There is plenty of unrest amongst fans at the minute and Wenger has suggested in the past that the media have printed ‘news’ in order to unsettle the Gunners, most notably before a crucial Champions League match against Bayern Munich in 2013.
With a split fanbase and one home game remaining, the media knew such a story would be inflammatory and cause some controversy.
However, it appears there is more clarity on it now.
As Wenger’s current Arsenal contract ends at the end of next season, his future will have to be decided before too long.
