After featuring against Turkey for England’s national team, Jack Wilshere revealed how he prefers playing in the middle of the pitch, rather than the wing.

Wilshere has been shuffled around the park for Arsenal, resulting in copious criticism from Gooners directed at Arsene Wenger. However, similar to Aaron Ramsey, this appears to mainly be down to the midfielder’s versatility compared to other squad members. He was played on the wing because although it wasn’t his preferred position, he was able to. For England, he hasn’t had to.

“With Arsenal I’ve been playing out wide, which is not me,” said Wilshere to the Guardian. “I’m not a wide man but Roy seems to have faith in me in the middle, so I’m happy with that. I like to play anywhere in the middle.

“I played the holding role before and I really enjoy that and this time I was a bit higher up the pitch and I enjoyed that as well. I’ve worked with Roy now and his staff for a number of years and they know what I bring and I know what they want from me as well.”

Despite what many media outlets are trying to twist, it doesn’t appear as if the 24-year-old is trying to have a dig at his manager at Arsenal. The fact that he likes to play in the middle isn’t new information – it’s not going to come as a surprise to the Frenchman. Could it be an extra push that this is where he would like to be played? Perhaps. It could also be an explanation to his critics who believe we’ve seen the best of him.
