Arsenal and Tottenham are both said to be interested in signing AFC Wimbledon’s Ryan Sweeny with Liverpool, West Ham and Burnley also said to be keeping an eye on the player.

The 19-year-old centreback is in line to make his 12th league start of the season when his side face Newport County on the final day of the season and Arsenal scouts will be watching.

The 6ft 4ins defender has earned rave reviews this season for not only his power but his mobility.

Born in London, he has represented Ireland at u18 level due to his father’s heritage.

Unlike many rumours at this time of the year, this could be one to keep an eye on.

Arsenal certainly need reinforcements in that area and it wouldn’t surprise me to see them try and take Sweeney from AFC Wimbledon.

He signed an extension to his current contract just a month ago when he was said to have snubbed early interest from Tottenham.

When signing the new deal, Sweeney said “The gaffer approached me and said he was going to offer me a new deal and I’m really pleased with it.

“I think I’ve progressed this season and especially over the last 18 months I feel I’ve come a really long way and my game has improved as a defender and also on the ball. My heart is set here. I want to play for Wimbledon. Every day I come into training to try.”

His ‘gaffer’, Neil Ardley, added: “It’s great news and we want our young, talented players to be at the club for a long time and he certainly comes under the bracket of being a first team player now.

“He’s hard to play against in training now and the strikers don’t enjoy playing against him. He knows what he has got to work upon, for example, when he comes up against smaller, more nimble strikers.

“But he’s six foot four, he’s left sided, he’s got good quality on the ball, he’s aggressive and he’s done a wonderful job for us in this run in.”

It would seem unlikely that he will move having just signed a new deal, but you never know.
