Arsenal are reportedly closing in on a deal for Granit Xhaka but, if other reports are to be believed, that will just be the start of Arsène Wenger’s summer spending.

The season has been a disappointing one but the Gunners will look to rectify obvious errors with the squad in the transfer market with a central midfielder being made a clear priority.

Borussia Mönchengladbach midfielder Granit Xhaka is expected to sign for around £34m, should reports in Germany be believed, even though sporting director Max Eberl is denying any official bid has been submitted.

It’s a surprise, though, that Arsenal would target Xhaka in addition to another midfielder. Reports have linked the Gunners with a move for Leicester City’s N’Golo Kanté for weeks now and they just won’t die down.

Another meeting between the players agents and representatives from Arsenal?

Kanté supposedly has a £20m release clause in his contract but doesn’t seem to be too eager to leave the Premier League champions.

“The Champions League next season will be new for me but I hear good things,” Kanté has said, before hinting that he will be experiencing Europe’s elite competition with his current club, rather than elsewhere.

“We don’t know if we can surprise in Europe, we have just joined at this moment, we will see. We have just done it for this season.

“When I came here I can’t imagine this, winning the title. Now we did it. It has been a good moment, we have to enjoy it.”
