11 points behind Leicester City with time to catch them running out, Arsène Wenger hasn’t given up on the Premier League title just yet.
The Arsenal boss hasn’t had his hands on the trophy since 2004 and ending that this season looks more unlikely every time the Foxes don’t drop points.
However, Wenger insists they can still be caught.
“Why not? As long as it’s mathematically possible there’s a strong possibility,” the boss defiantly told the media on Thursday morning.
“If you look at the difficulty of the Premier League they have been remarkably consistent but every game is very tight so that can go the other way as well.”
Arsenal do have a game in hand but would need Leicester to drop eight points in just six games to even have a chance of making up the necessary ground. It’s a lot to ask of a team who have won eight of their last 10 Premier League matches.
“We know we need nearly the perfect run.”
The points are also important in the fight for Champions League football: Manchester City and Manchester United are only four and five points behind the Gunners respectively while West Ham would close their gap to Arsenal to just four points with a win this weekend.
Not finishing in the top four would be a disaster.
“We know as well we don’t look in front of us but behind us because we are chased by a group of teams who can make it very difficult for us so we have to just focus on our performance and hope we finish in a very strong way.”
Fingers crossed. If we don’t win the league it is because of our previous results, not those to come. All we can do now is win each game and hope Leicester begin to stumble.
