Arsene Wenger’s latest comments regarding the team’s ambition are sure to rub most fans up the wrong way.
Speaking ahead of our match with West Brom on Thursday, the boss touched on the ‘disenchanted’ fans and admitted that he hopes they will get behind the team. However, he went on to say that he hopes to get in the top three in the coming years… just the ‘top three’ Wenger?
“[Fan support] is ideal, yes,” he said.
“You do not want to play in a negative environment if we do we can still perform. We are responsible for the performance of the team and it is true that at the moment it is not a highlight but we have to take a distance with that. I hope in the next years Arsenal will always play in the top three and hopefully, people won’t get disenchanted and have to agree with less.”
This isn’t what fans want to be hearing at the moment. We want him to target the top. We want the League title for the first time in a decade. We can’t keep being happy with coming third and it’s concerning that Wenger would expect that.
The thing is, coming in the top three isn’t too bad as long as we’re competing. As long as we’re putting pressure on the teams above us. Settling for third and being in third but fighting for the title are two separate situations. All we want is to know that our team want to compete and don’t want to settle for runners-up.
