Arsene Wenger concerned Arsenal fans recently when he insisted that although he realises we need to strengthen, it’s not easy to find the players.

For several seasons we’ve known that we need to strengthen and for several seasons we’ve been assured that we have the funds in place to add to our squad. However, although we have made the odd additions (namely, Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez), we’ve always been ‘one-or-two players’ away from being proper title contenders.

Wenger has left Gooners with further cause for concern by not confirming that he will definitely be adding to the team in the summer.

“If you look at the top three teams, you will see they have not changed their team a lot,” Wenger said.

“We have to strengthen our squad but it’s not obvious to find the players despite the money the English clubs will have. We are already working but we have to find the players and that is not easy.

“You cannot dismiss that the players are young: Alex Iwobi is 19, Mohamed Elneny is 23, Francis Coquelin 24, and they will be stronger next year but you need to keep a core of players and strengthen where we can. The team is going the right way.”

On one hand I do understand Wenger’s tactics. He likes to play his – financial – cards close to his chest and he doesn’t want our targets’ agents ramping up their rates. However, how do we know this is actually the case this time? Do we actually have any targets?

The fans need something tangible right now. They need a light at the end of the tunnel and the boss has to be the one to deliver it.
