After an incredible season, could N’Golo Kanté be tempted away from Leicester City?
The French midfielder has been excellent for the Foxes and even earned himself a nomination for the PFA Players’ Player of the Year, alongside two of his Leicester City teammates and Mesut Özil. But could he be on the move in the summer?
Leicester are guaranteed to be in the Champions League and are now favourites to secure the Premier League title but Kanté could earn more money elsewhere and may not deem Leicester’s success as sustainable.
The situation becomes all the more interesting when you factor in a £20m release clause in the midfielder’s contract, as is being reported by the Daily Mail.
Last month, Kanté spoke fairly openly about the possibility of him leaving Leicester.
“I will fight for Leicester this season and next season we never know and we will see,“ the Frenchman said. “At this moment I am focused on Leicester. We have to finish well this season but I don’t mind about [being linked to] the other clubs.”
Those other clubs now include European heavyweights such as Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain: surely it would be hard to say no if they came knocking and activated his release clause?
Arsenal have been linked with a move for the midfielder but, in all honesty, we find that hard to see happening. Kanté has thrived thanks to Leicester’s defensive diligence and willingness to play at breakneck speed on the break, things Arsenal don’t tend to attempt.
The reasons to sign Kanté seem obvious but, ultimately, would he really fit Arsenal?
