Arsenal midfielder Mesut Özil has missed out on the PFA Premier League Team of the Year but teammate Héctor Bellerín has been voted in by his peers.
Just 20, Bellerín is playing his first full season of first team football at Arsenal and recognition from his fellow players, who vote for the team, is incredible for such a young player.
The bigger news for Arsenal fans, though, will be the fact that Mesut Özil wasn’t even selected as one of the top four midfielders in the country.
Özil has more assists than any other player in a major European league this season but was snubbed by his fellow players for Dimitri Payet and Dele Alli. It’s an odd situation, with Özil nominated for player of the year and Alli missing out on a nomination fort that particular award.
Ultimately, the only sound conclusion is that Premier League players are either biased or don’t quite understand the game. Or both. The decision not to include Özil for the season he’s had is frankly laughable.
Nonetheless, congratulations to Héctor for being selected!
