Alex Iwobi has been handed a new contract worth far in excess what initial reports claimed.

After initially bursting on the scene while earning only £750 per week on the new deal he signed just last year, reports came quickly that he would be rewarded with another new contract that would see his wages rise by as much as 800%.

Now, however, it is being claimed that the new five-year-deal that has been offered to the young Nigerian is worth £30,000 – a 40,000% raise.

Not bad, eh?

His new deal will tie him to the club until 2021 but you have to imagine that should he continue to impress and improve as he has done over recent weeks, then another deal can’t be far behind.

It’s also being claimed that he had agreed a £10,000-a-week deal in October and wasn’t actually on £750-per-week which really takes the shine off the ‘rags-to-riches’ angle of this deal but still represents a pay-rise most of us can only dream about. The Independent also claim he was under contract until 2019 while Transfermrkt say 2020.

In a week that saw Iwobi also make his full competitive debut for Nigeria as well as score his second Premier League goal in his second start, things aren’t going at all badly for Alex at all.

After his recent MOTM performance against Watford, Arsene Wenger said “These people have seen many good players over the years and they know straight away when a player has something special, so they acknowledge that. [cont]
