West Ham’s Dimitri Payet has won the London Player of the Year award ahead of the likes of Mesut Ozil and Harry Kane.
The midfielder has appeared 27 times for the Hammers this season, scored nine goals and made nine assists. He’s been a revelation and the West Ham fans love him. However, did he really deserve to win the award over our own Mesut Ozil?
Although Ozil has scored less, he’s assisted 18 in the Premier League and we currently sit higher in the table.
Saying this, it’s hard to begrudge the former Marseille man his award considering how pleased he is with the achievement. The 28-year-old assisted 21 times in Ligue 1 last season so he’s clearly an immense player.
“It is of course an honour and a great joy for me to receive this award after only one season here. It’s the first time in my career that I have received a personal award like this,”” he said.
“Last year, I won Best Passer in Ligue 1, but this is the first time I have been named best player.
“Being recognised like this after only one season here is particularly special, especially when I saw the nominations for this award. They are all great players and vital to each of their clubs, so that gives even more value to this award.
“I hope that this can be start of lots of trophies, especially for the team, because the team is always the most important.”
In addition, Payet has helped West Ham climb to sixth in the Premier League, just one point behind the Manchester teams in fourth and fifth. While we are higher in third, this is usually where we are, so although Ozil has been fantastic, he’s not helped propel us in the way Payet has for West Ham.
