Paul Merson believes Zlatan Ibrahimovic would be a great addition to the Arsenal squad but Arsene Wenger won’t sign him because the goalscorer would question him.

The Paris Saint-Germain star looks as if he’s leaving the Ligue 1 club at the end of this season once his contract runs out and Arsenal have been heavily linked with a move for him. However, while some believe the striker could be the missing piece of Arsenal’s puzzle, many reckon the controversial star would cause too much commotion behind the scenes.

Merson believes both.

“He’s got to play the game with the fans sometimes,” Merson said to Sky Sports.

“He gets asked about Zlatan Ibrahimovic. All you have to do is turn around and say ‘I’d love to get him, if he wants to come to London I want him’ – and the fans would be happy. If you don’t get him, then you don’t get him – but don’t say ‘oh, I’m not sure’.”

“Ibrahimovic is a winner. He’s won 13 trophies in so many leagues. Of course, Wenger isn’t going to sign him because he’s going to question him.

“He doesn’t want someone sitting in the dressing room questioning him. He doesn’t want people to come in after the game and start tearing it up. He just wants people to come in and recover.

“Last year (Karim) Benzema didn’t come in and he said (Olivier) Giroud’s going to get more goals then Benzema. Seriously?”

Zlatan has scored 35 goals in 39 appearances for PSG this season and there’s no doubt about it, he’s a world class striker. And considering how hard we’ve found it in recent months to find the back of the net, he seems like an attractive prospect but there’s no doubt that he would upset the all-important ‘balance’ that Wenger’s so fond of.

Ultimately, it’s not down to the fans. However, a lot rides on where we finish this season.
