Arsenal forward Joel Campbell started for Costa Rica on Friday night but couldn’t help the side to anything more than a 1-1 draw against Jamaica.

It was the 23-year-old’s 60th cap for his country as played 89 minutes and picked up a yellow card in the draw. Playing on the right of midfield, where he has impressed at times for the Gunners this season, Campbell couldn’t make the most of a decent opportunity to win the game.

The draw was enough to keep Costa Rica top of their World Cup qualifying group for the time being, three points clear of both Panama and Jamaica. They face Jamaica again in midweek, when they will have the opportunity to extend their advantage at the top of the table.

That game will take place in the early hours of Wednesday morning, so Campbell could be too tired from playing and travelling to feature for Arsenal next weekend in a three o’clock kick-off against Watford.

Other players involved for their countries on Friday were Olivier Giroud and Laurent Koscielny, Alex Iwobi, and Mohamed Elneny.

On Saturday, Danny Welbeck will play for England against Germany, who could use Arsenal man Mesut Özil.
