Another summer of international football is coming, which almost certainly means another inquest into the failure of the English national team.
I mean, it always does.
England head to Euro 2016 in the summer and there is still one distinct difference between domestic players in England and everywhere else in Europe: the winter break. The other major leagues allow players at least two weeks off to rest and relax before getting back into the swing of things supposedly recharged.
With talks of reforming the FA Cup, could England be set to introduce a break? Maybe, but Arsène Wenger is skeptical.
“I have nothing against it but then again you need to find dates,” the Arsenal manager told the press on Friday morning. “If it’s to shorten the break in the summer then I’m against it.
“We face now more and more summer periods where we cannot prepare our teams because the preparation is too short. The European Championship has gone to 24 teams. Even the European Championship now is one month, it finishes 10th July and you start (the season) at the beginning of August, so if it is to shorten that on top of that I am against it.
“If we can find the little break in winter after Christmas I’m happy.”
The boss has a point, of course. If you have a fortnight off in January, for example, you have to find more time to play the games which usually take place then. There isn’t an ideal solution.
Friday morning also saw Wenger speak out against the potential reform of the FA Cup, but why is nobody speaking about the League Cup? Let’s face it, the competition is ridiculous. Nobody takes it seriously anyway and it’s only the second biggest cup competition in England.
So, we want a winter break? Why not scrap the League Cup and reschedule Premier League matches for those free midweek slots?
