Martin Keown believes that the bigger teams in Europe, such as PSG, Barcelona and Bayern Munich, will be too much for the English clubs to deal with.
The next round of the Champions League is just around the corner with Arsenal facing Barcelona on February 23rd. However, Arsenal legend Keown doesn’t think we’ve got enough fire power against the Catalan giants and as a result won’t get the win.
The former defender wrote in his column in the Daily Mail, “The biggest clubs on the continent now have the best players and you generally need your share of world-class talent to succeed in the Champions League.
“Look at Barcelona’s front three of Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar.
“Or Bayern Munich with Robert Lewandowski, Thomas Muller and Arjen Robben.
“English clubs cannot compete with that.
“Don’t get me wrong, we have some fantastic attacking talent in the Premier League, but an attack of Olivier Giroud, Theo Walcott and Alexis Sanchez, for example, isn’t quite on the same level.”
As harsh as it may sound, I do tend to agree with him. Barcelona are flying high at the moment and aren’t showing any signs of slowing down. Although I believe we could get a draw and maybe even a win at the Emirates, on their turf it’ll probably be a different story.
All we can do is give it our best shot. In a way, it relieves the pressure because we have nothing to lose. No one really expects us to win so anything is a bonus.
