Southampton boss, Ronald Koeman, reportedly shut Arsene Wenger down in the tunnel following our 0-0 draw with the Saints for trying to blame the referee.

The Saints’ boss was reportedly heard telling Wenger off after he tried to have a go at Lee Mason, the referee for Tuesday’s game.

Apparently, he said:

“And it’s always the same with you. You had 10 chances to score and couldn’t take any of them so why have a go at them?”

If true, I half agree with Koeman and half with Wenger. As much as we should have put one of our (21!) chances away, Mason did have an appalling match and this isn’t anything new if you look at the stats. The man doesn’t have it in for us, he just isn’t a good referee.

Whether Koeman actually said this isn’t clear. However, there’s not usually smoke without fire and I can imagine Wenger did have some choice words for the ref following the final whistle.

In the Saints’ manager’s post-match press conference though, he admitted himself that they were lucky considering how many shots we had on target.
