Eight Gooners are embarking on a 300-mile bike ride in May (18th) in order to raise money for Multiple Sclerosis.

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a neurological condition which effects the central nervous system. Symptoms include a loss of balance, problems with vision, and walking and sufferers have trouble carrying out tasks many of us take for granted.

The team, who are currently only £2,000 off their £12,000 target, have called themselves ‘PeloTonyAdaMS’ – peloton (a group of bike riders), Tony Adams and MS combined.

They decided to embark on this huge journey, which will take them four days, after a friend, who doesn’t wish to be named, was diagnosed with the life changing condition.

Speaking to the Islington Gazette, one of the participants, Ed Quigley said, “It turned his life upside down. We’re talking about someone who was diagnosed in his early thirties. Up until then he had led a very active lifestyle.

“It was the first six months after he was diagnosed when he was trying to come to terms with it that were the most difficult. As a friend there’s nothing you can do apart from be there and listen – you just feel powerless.”

Quigley added, “Some of us haven’t been on a bike since they were kids so it’s a real challenge,”

“We’re hoping some Islington businesses will sponsor us so we’ve got seven spots on our cycling jerseys. We’ve already managed to get a few – we just need a couple more.”

My mum was diagnosed with MS when I was young, so this story hits very close to home. I’ve seen how it can completely change someone’s life and also how much the support of those around the sufferer is needed.
