Jermaine Pennant has signed a one-year deal with Singapore side Tampines Rovers.
Leaving Wigan in June, Pennant has been a free agent for the past seven months despite only being 33.
Although his wages have not been confirmed, it is believed that Pennant is now the S League’s best-paid player with the chairman of Tampines, Krishna Ramachandra, saying that it was a ‘sexy figure’.
“There’s going to be more signings to come and it shows they want to go big, they want to achieve big, so that was really a done deal,” Pennant said.
“I wanted to be part of it. Everyone has made me feel welcome, the country is fantastic. You put that all together and it’s a no-brainer, really.
“I am here to try to make history again,” he added.
“I will give 110 % on the pitch, off the pitch, any way I can help. That’s what I am here for and I look forward to it. I am really looking forward to the chance to do something special for Singapore and Tampines.”
Of course, we all know that it is impossible to give any more than 100% so perhaps that’s why Jermaine has struggled in his career so far – he’s been trying to do the impossible.
Arriving at Arsenal in 1998 when he was just 15 for a then-record trainee fee of £2m, Pennant made just 12 league appearances for the Gunners (scoring three goals) before he was sent out on loan to Watford (twice), Leeds and Birmingham.
He was then sold to Birmingham in 2005 before moving on to Liverpool, Portsmouth (loan), Real Zaragoza, Stoke, Wolves (loan), FC Pune City, and Wigan.
His career has been peppered with incidents of ill-discipline and could, rightly, serve as a lesson to all youngsters coming through on how to waste your talent.
